Create Your Own Oasis
When I was a child, I always looked forward to visiting my Grandmother’s house. She had one of the biggest butterfly gardens I have ever seen. I loved sitting on the bench, which was centered in the garden, and watching all of the butterflies fluttering around me. There is just something very relaxing about finding yourself emerged in the beautiful colors and patterns. Kansas City is the perfect place to plant your own butterfly garden, and getting started is easy too.
There are two types of plants that you will need to add to your butterfly garden. First, you will need to plant some that act as host. The host plant will provide food and shelter to the butterfly eggs and larvae. The second kinds of plants, the nourishment plants, provide nectar that the adult butterflies eat. Planting both varieties will ensure that your garden nourishes the full life cycle of the butterfly.
The following plants act as host plants for your garden:
Milkweed: This is the plant that the Monarch caterpillars eat, and it also attracts many adult butterflies
Dill: Many varieties of Swallowtails use dill for laying eggs and feeding their young
Fennel: This type of plant also attracts Swallowtail butterflies
Parsley: Swallowtails, Viceroy, and many other caterpillars love this plant
The plants below will provide nectar for adult butterflies:
Butterfly Bush: The Comma and Mourning Cloak butterfly species love the nectar from this plant
Cosmos: This plant will attract Silvery Checkerspot butterflies
Zinnia: Painted Lady butterflies are very attracted to this nectar
Once you have decided on what plants to use, and planted them in your garden area, you can add even more things to attract butterflies. A water source and butterfly house will take your garden to the next level, and a sitting area will ensure that you and your guests are able to enjoy them.
